How spending time outside can improve quality of life and overall health for seniors

The benefits of being outside and enjoying the sights and sounds of nature are undeniable. And at Arizona Homestead, we encourage outdoor activities on a daily basis. From the birds chirping to the sound of wind in the trees, nature can truly take our minds to another level, and away from the stress and anxieties in day-to-day life.

There is nothing quite like a breath of fresh air, especially after spending too much time inside, which let’s face it, we are all guilty of doing—especially during this pandemic. If you’re wondering if you’re spending a little too much time inside, pay attention to the signs and symptoms your body may be showing you. If you’re feeling not so great (from sleep troubles to fatigue), getting outside for a bit may be just the thing you need.

“The blue light that’s outside in the early morning gives you a natural energy boost, no caffeine required.”

That sounds like a great reason to get outside. Bring along a little music, a journal, or anything that may make you feel good. At Arizona Homestead, we have a great deal of resources for our residents! Sunshine and a nice outdoor activity is exactly what we recommend. The warm sunshine is so comforting. Sunshine alone has so many health benefits:

Vitamin D benefits:

  • supporting healthy bones
  • managing calcium levels
  • reducing inflammation
  • supporting the immune system and glucose metabolism

Protection from diseases, such as:

  • type 1 diabetes
  • multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • several forms of cancer, including colon, breast, and prostate cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma

At times, it may be hard to find things to do outside, which is why we offer activities and outdoor fun for our guests. There really are so many options for outdoor fun that are sure to free our minds. From gardening to having a nice picnic with some friends or family members, there are many ideas to try. And if you don’t like one activity, you can always try another.

Sometimes, trying is the hardest part!  Some days we may not want to get outside at all. Maybe we feel a little depressed, or are just not finding the energy to get moving. If you ever feel that way, you aren’t the only one! We are only human, but there are many tips for getting started and finding the motivation to get outside:

  • Find a group to do outdoor activities with
  • Just get moving!
  • Always know that you will feel better
  • Have something you enjoy doing

There is so much more to discuss on the topic of being outside, but let’s not forget the importance of sunscreen and being mindful of the time spent in the sun. And in some states, especially Arizona, we know that the sun can be downright aggressive, but that doesn’t have to take away from the benefits.

Now with the elephant in the room: we are in a time where masks are mandatory and getting outside may not be as easy as it once was. That being said, when it is safe and appropriate for you to be outside and enjoy nature, and when you are able to incorporate sunscreen, water and other necessities, you will not regret it. Our residents love Arizona Homestead, and we know you and your loved ones will too!
